The Veldmaster (Africarne) – A Veld-Productive African Beef Animal The Veldmaster was developed by Johan Zietsman. Based on the theory of The Veldmaster, Daniel Thomas is driven to produce his own genetic model which aims to achieve the highest profit per hectare, in South Africa, while achieving maximum sustainability.
The Veldmaster (Africarne) – A Veld-Productive African Beef Animal
The Veldmaster was developed by Johan Zietsman in response to the limitations of conventional beef breeds under African veld conditions. His work showed that cattle bred primarily for performance in controlled systems struggled to maintain fertility, resilience, and body condition under non-selective grazing.
By introducing African breeds such as Mashona, Sanga, and Zebu, Zietsman demonstrated that cattle with higher African blood content showed dramatically improved tick resistance, disease resilience, fertility, and overall body condition—without dipping or dosing. This approach laid the foundation for the Veldmaster in southern Africa and continues to guide Kairos Veldmasters today, with growing international interest in its counterpart, Africarne.
The Core Goal
The Veldmaster is not bred for maximum growth, feedlot performance, colour, or show traits.
The single objective is:
Maximum sustainable profit per hectare under natural veld conditions.
This is achieved through:
• Efficient grass conversion (high relative intake)
• Excellent fertility and early maturity
• Strong parasite and disease resistance
• Good body condition under non-selective grazing
• Optimum milk production
• High meat-to-bone ratio
• Easy-care, low-input management
A Different Breeding Philosophy
Veldmaster breeding deliberately avoids conventional breed-society structures. There are:
• No formal herd inspections
• No competitive showing
• No between-herd comparisons
• No society-controlled sales
Instead, breeders operate independently under shared guidelines, taking full responsibility for their cattle. Each herd is identified by a unique prefix, recognising that Veldmasters differ by environment and management.
Genetics & Selection
• A minimum of 50% African breed blood is required
• Strong selection pressure is essential
• Heifers must calve at 2 and again at 3 years to qualify as selected animals
• Fertility is the primary measure of excellence
• Bulls are selected for fertility, serving ability, maturity, and muscling
• Tick resistance, parasite tolerance, temperament, mothering ability, calving ease, pigmentation, and meat-to-bone ratio are all critical functional traits
Management Principles
Veldmasters are bred to thrive under:
• Short breeding seasons
• Minimal or no dipping
• No routine dosing
• Strategic supplementation to support rumen function
• High-impact, non-selective grazing systems

At Kairos Veldmasters, we intentionally practise and apply Johan Zietsman’s Veldmaster principles. Our breeding philosophy is rooted in the same understanding: that true adaptation to African veld requires genetics shaped by the veld itself. Early Veldmaster development focused on adapting Beefmaster cattle to tropical sourveld, but it soon became clear that lasting resilience—especially under non-selective grazing—could only be achieved through a stronger African genetic foundation.
Natural selection is accelerated through challenging but well-managed veld conditions, ensuring only the most adapted animals remain in the breeding herd.
The Veldmaster Advantage
The Veldmaster represents a return to biological efficiency, where cattle work with the veld rather than against it. When combined with sound grazing management, Veldmasters offer a practical, profitable, and ecologically sustainable beef solution for African environments.
